Galfar mentioned in the bug thread about duplicating interceptors bug being "already patched." So I am kind of wondering where this mysterious patch is...

the mmswitch.ax problem:
I seem to have solved my crashes... The culprit is a codec file (mmswitch.ax), which has been mentioned before (also causes problems in other apps).
Fix:
First check if the file is on you cpu.
If so:
- rename / remove
- type "regsvr32 /u mmswitch.ax" in run (win + R)
Not 100 % sure if the second one works, but it works for Windows Media Player.

If you're having problems with UFO:ET jumping to the desktop every time a video is being started (this happens when the intro plays and every time you select a soldier) and you have ffdshow installed , then you need to update ffdshow to a recent version, from http://ffdshow-tryout.sourceforge.net/

just a reminder,a fix or workaround should preferably apply to majority.
if its just a bug or bugfix, drop it in the other thread.
wouldnt want people messing with thier gamefiles if they dont know what they do

The number of people who have had that bug (UFO crashing the game when it gets to a lost base) is probably more than people who have had the thread-starting bug.
Plus taking a quick look back, much of this thread is filled with un-related posts.
If it's meant to help people it should be filled with posts that tell them how to fix problems, not non-soldier centering mods, that and our little discussion earlier.
I should also point out that the "majority" of people don't seem to get any of the same bugs. Numerous people get many _diffferent_ bugs, not no majority have the same bug.

i've got an idea regarding us/those who are experiencing crashes with grenades;
if you extract the system file with xbig, and then edit for example, the laser pistol (no real good use of it anyway) in data\scripts\tests\config.xsv and set it damageType to "stun" wouldn't that help instead of having to throw grenades to stun enemy commanders?
Just a thought.
Edit: I think I also have a workaround when it comes to audio level in tactics missions, this is how I did, not sure if the whole process is needed:
I ALT+TAB'd out to Windows, watch a few seconds of a movie, ALT+TAB'd into game again, changed the music volume in-game to minimum, ALT+TAB'd back to windows, watched some more of that movie, ALT+TAB'd back to the game, increased the volume of music (to 75%). Now, when I play a tactics mission, the audio level is as it should be (like when in Geoscape).
Edit2: I have successfully tested the stungrenade for Laser pistol now, and it works as it "should", could be a nice featurette for all of those who have problems throwing grenades and aren't too fond of the rocket launcher.
(It is used with bman's mod, but I don't think that mod has any affect of this).

I really like UFO ET. The maps are a lot nicer and funner to play than the X-Com maps were -- more variety and detail and surprises. They should be proud of their accomplishment -- an X-Com Clone that seems to have better gameplay and better maps than X-Com.
Probably my biggest wish is that there were more layers and flying armor and teleporters and stuff like that. More air play and flying in the Air like X-Com and X-Com Apocalypse.
But, I'm posting here because my biggest complaint so far is the lack of a gamma setting. Some of those bases are too dark. And, if you adjust it on the monitor so that you can see, then your monitor is too bright when you exit UFO ET.
1) I'm looking for a workaround or a fix that allows you to change the gamma setting and increase the brightness inside the UFO ET game itself. Nothing there on Settings that I could see where these things usually are.
2) The other thing that's bugging me is that when you are on the Research screen and you select new items, it doesn't tell you anywhere what researching that item is going to do for you, unlike UFO Aftershock and some of the other UFO Clones I have played. Only after you have researched it does it tell you what it does and then you can also see what other tech it opens up. So, the other workaround or fix that I'm looking for is a Tech Tree. Does anyone know where there is a Tech Tree drawn or printed for the plain vanilla patched UFO ET, a link or some such, so that I can kind of plan where I want this thing to go when I do my research for UFO ET?
Those are the workarounds or the fixes that I would like to see implemented or have found. Obviously, somebody might have already dealt with these subjects and resolved them, but I haven't seen the solutions yet.

I just finished my first UFO ET campaign, and I really enjoyed it. It took me three months of free time at the Hard Setting.
I noticed one really important thing that I thought I should mention.
I noticed that once I stopped using the F12 key, I never had another UFO ET crash or corrupted save ever again!
Once I stopped using the F12 key to quickload, the UFO ET game went rock solid stable.
I think that's a very useful tip for every UFO ET gameplayer to know!
And, of course, for the next UFO ET patch, that gives Chaos Concepts someplace they can look for things to fix or improve.
If you are wanting to know what I think is the best workaround in UFO ET, it's avoiding the F12 key at all costs.
